PRESS RELEASE - Vietnam needs to promote the participation of people with disabilities (PWDs) on the implementation monitoring of the Convention on the Rights of People with disabilities (CRPD)

[Hanoi, 23 March 2017] “Vietnam has achieved some certain results after 2-year approval of CRPD. However, the monitoring of individuals, organizations of and for PWDs on the enforcement of CRPD is still limited. Therefore, to ensure the full implementation of CRPD, Vietnam needs to strongly promote the participation of PWDs in the process”, this is the confirmation of the Vietnam Federation on Disability (VFD) in the International Conference – Promoting the monitoring implementation of CRPD, would be taken place from 18 to 19 April 2017, at InterContinental Hanoi WestLake Hotel. Under the sponsor of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), the conference is hold in the cooperation of Action to the Community Development Center (ACDC) and Christian Blind Mission Organization (CBM). 

On the 5th February 2015, the United Nations officially recognized the approval of CRPD in Vietnam. With signing approval, Vietnam commits to ensure and promote to bring the fundamental rights of human beings becoming real for PWDs, in which there is no disability discrimination. The International Conference – Promoting the monitoring implementation of CRPD is conducted during the Vietnam period of positive changes after 2-year of CRPD approval, National Report by Government and independent monitoring report of organizations, Vietna mese PWDs are in the building process, and the expectation to have experiences from other countries in the implementation and the monitoring of CRPD.  

The objective of the Conference is to enhance capacity in the implementation monitoring of CRPD through exchanging and obtaining experiences between countries, then contributing to better ensure the rights of PWDs. In accordance to that, the Conference will gather the participation of about 150 people coming from governmental agencies, national organizations of and for PWDs, individuals and organizations working in the field of PWDs from other countries such as member states of ASEAN, Japan, Australia. 

During the 2-day long of the Conference, delegates would exchange and share their experiences in the implementation monitoring of CRPD by reviewing the national and international models of some of and for PWDs organizations. These ones place an emphasis on some specific areas included women, girls with disabilities, labor and employment, the access to facilities and information. The experiences in building and submitting the implementation monitoring report of CRPD to the United Nations are also shared and presented.

With the mission “Sharing beliefs, empowering positions”, we commit to support and promote the assurance for the rights of Vietnamese PWDs”.
