Hanoi: Internet safety training for children with disabilities

In order to enhance knowledge about online safety and the ability to recognize and prevent risks in cyberspace for children with disabilities, ACDC organized a training course on smart and safe internet usage in Hanoi. The training course took place on March 4th and 5th, 2023, with the participation of 15 students with various types of disabilities.

At the training course, the students shared basic knowledge related to children's rights, for example, the definition of Children's Rights under the International Convention on the Rights of the Child, under the 2016 Law on Children of Vietnam; rights groups; address to report child rights violations…; The main focus of the training was on the characteristics of the internet, cyber safety, cyber risks for children with disabilities, and potential risks to children in cyberspace, with special emphasis on the risks of gender-based violence and sexual abuse. In addition, how to prevent and respond to children with disabilities risks in the online environment and some report addresses, advice, and support when risks occur in the online environment have also been provided to them.

Participants join a game about their hobby to apply to many situations in the internet

Numerous methods have been integrated such as slideshows, games, color cards, small group exercises, etc. The integration of these methods has helped students with different types of disabilities such as visual disabilities, hearing and speech disabilities, and others, to better remember the information and motivate them to apply the knowledge they have learned for their study and life.

At the end of the training session, the students shared positive feedback:

“After this training, I have learned very useful knowledge. I learned how to increase security for my social media accounts, how to filter out good and bad information, and how to protect myself on the internet.” – L.H.H, 17 years old, a boy with visual disabilities, Hanoi shared.

Although the training course was only two short days, I have learned a whole lot of useful knowledge and had the opportunity to meet other students with different types of disabilities.” - N.D.L.H, 15 years old, a girl with visual disabilities, shared.

The activity is within the framework of the project "Increased accountability to eliminate violence and discrimination against children with disabilities" funded by Save the Children Hong Kong and coordinated by Save the Children Vietnam.
