On March 11, 2022, more than 30 cadres of related organizations such as the Women's Union, the Red Cross Union, and the Health Center attended a training course on Independent Living of Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) at Hai Son Commune, Hai Lang District, Quang Tri Province. Mr. Nguyen Tuan Thap - Chairman of Hai Lang District Association of PWDs, Agent Orange Victims, , Sponsoring PWDs and Protecting Children's Rights also participated in this course.

Thanks to the detailed and dedicated introduction and guidance of the lecturers who are PWDs in the group of Peer Counselling source lecturers, trainees had a basic understanding of the definition and classification disability, definition of independent living, factors helping PWDs live independently, etc. In particular, trainees were very excited when watching a short video about the accessible house model at ACDC’s Quang Tri office. As a result, they have known that there are many ways to make appropriate changes, depending on the disability and family conditions of each PWD, so that they can live more easily in their own home. During the discussion about the accessible house, Ms P.T.H said: “Usually, most houses for PWDs are already in place and inaccessible. Therefore, it is very difficult for PWDs to demolish and redesign them to make them accessible. It is only possible to advise and guide PWDs to renovate the houses to suit their conditions.”

In the closing ceremony of the training course, Mr. T.M.T – Secretary of Hai Son Commune Ho Chi Minh Communist Youth Union shared: “After this training course, the Commune Youth Union will cooperate with other mass organizations to organize conferences and seminars; integrate into meetings the policies of the Party and State for PWDs, Rights of PWDs, factors that help PWDs live independently; support  in creating job opportunities to help some PWDs earn extra income and make ends meet; at the same time, encourage the Union members with disabilities to strive and integrate into the society.”

The activity is within the framework of the project "Improving the independent living situation of PWDs" jointly implemented by Humanity & Inclusion Vietnam (HI) and ACDC in Quang Tri Province. The project will continue with other activities in the future to enhance the quality of life for PWDs in the localities.
