05 out of 25 households of persons with disabilities modified their houses and others had positive changes through home visits on independent living in Quang Tri province.

Mr. N.Đ.T., a person with a mobility disability in Quang Tri town, boasted as soon as the counseling team arrived at his home: “After you came for counseling, my daughter decided to replace the squad toilet with a toilet so I could use it more safely and conveniently. My family now has a greater understanding of independent living for persons with disabilities and physical access at home. I would like to express my sincere thanks to the counselors and the project".

From March 25-27, 2024, the project “Raising Voices, Creating Opportunities” for persons with disabilities phase II cooperated with Quang Tri provincial OPD to conduct the second home visits on independent living for 25 households of persons with disabilities in Gio Linh district and Quang Tri town. Each counseling team included a health practitioner, an OPD staff and a policy official. Counselors gave persons with disabilities and their families advice and instruction on interactive functionality in daily activities, social inclusion, policies related to persons with disabilities, and physical access at home.

Five months after the initial visit, the counseling teams were ecstatic to see the improvements that persons with disabilities and their families had made. In particular, three persons with disabilities installed handrails in their bathrooms using easily available household materials like wooden bars and water pipes, while two households converted their squat toilets to toilets. Furthermore, many other people have followed the recommendations of the counseling teams to improve their health, happiness, and optimism—such as altering their diet and engaging in regular exercise, etc.

Said Mr. T.D.Q, a person with disability in Gio Linh district: “I put in a handrail in the restroom after taking part in the training and getting advice and instruction from the officials. Since I was unable to purchase a handrail, I asked a friend to install and weld one using the plumbing readily available in my house. This handrail is very convenient for me to stand up and sit down when going to the toilet. I'll try to install more in my house so that I can move safely.”

The activity is within the project “Raising Voices, Creating Opportunities” phase II, funded by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and implemented by ACDC in Quang Tri, Thua Thien Hue, and Quang Nam provinces.
