Thua Thien Hue: Training on Independent Living and Disability Equality for persons with disabilities and caregivers

On July 08-09, 2022, within the framework of the project "Raising voices, creating opportunities for persons with disabilities in the period of 2021 - 2024" in Thua Thien Hue province, ACDC coordinated with the Project Management Unit to organize a training course on “Independent Living and Disability Equality for persons with disabilities and caregivers” in Quang Dien district and Huong Tra town. The project is sponsored by the USAID.

In particular, apart from the participation of the experienced main trainer who is from a group of source lectures, the training also has the presence of teaching assistants who are local officials of Labour, War Invalids and Social Affairs and members of local Organisation of Persons with Disabilities.

During the training, the lectures and teaching assitants actively shared with trainees the content of independent living, barriers for persons with disabilities, policies related to persons with disabilities, personal financial management, renovate accessible houses,... Furthermore, the combination of different teaching methods such as group exercises, group discussions, answering via color cards, etc., has encouraged the participation of students as well as created a joyful and vibrant atmosphere for the entire hall. This is also an opportunity for persons with disabilities to share their problems and receive timely support and counsel from trainers

This activity has received a lot of positive feedback throughout the process. Among them, there are typical responses as follows:

 “Today, I can’t say anything more, I’d like to thank the project for caring and organizing this training course for persons with disabilities. I hope that people who participate in today's training class will have more useful knowledge about independent living and disability equality for themselves and their families. Indeed, I have to say that studying will make you better, welcome to today's class." Mr. Ho Xe - Chairman of the OPDs in Quang Dien district shared.

Ms. T.T.H - a person with a disability in Quang Dien district shared "I was born normally, but after a stroke, I become a person with a disability. Sometimes, I feel sad but also encourage myself. For me, today's training session is very great, persons with disabilities like me have the opportunity to learn more, share, integrate into the community and rise up in life. I’d like to say thank you to the program and the project.”

Mr. H.S – a person with a disability in Quang Dien district shared “Training like this for persons with disabilities is really meaningful, thank you for taking care of persons with disabilities like me. In the past, I rarely participated in crowded activities like this because I was also shy, but through this, if there is a chance, I will participate again. Today, I have met many people to share what I am thinking, I am also more confident. Especially, I found that the content related to renovating accessible houses is very useful, helping me understand more about how to arrange a convenient living space. "

Mr. L.D.D - a person with a disability in Huong Tra town shared “My limbs are very weak and it’s difficult for me to walk, but today I tried also to arrange to attend this training. I see that the organizers are really caring, the training content is really great for persons with disabilities.”

Along with many other activities, the training course has provided useful knowledge about independent living and disability equality for persons with disabilities and their families, thereby contributing to improving the quality of life of persons with disabilities in the community.
