"In the past, I mainly moved around using a plastic chair and only stayed at home or occasionally went to my grandparents' house nearby, feeling self-conscious and not making friends with anyone. Now I can move around by myself using a wheelchair, have a knitting profession to create additional income and have made more friends. In my free time, I help my mother with household chores. I feel that my life has more meaning, happiness, and optimism."

Le Thi Hoai Nho decided to choose knitting as a profession suitable for her health condition.

Le Thi Hoai Nho, 20 years old, currently living in Cam Nghia commune, Cam Lo district, Quang Tri province. She was born with brittle bone disease. Her father had hearing impairment and her family is in difficult circumstance. Being born and growing up with a rare illness and weak health, she only attended school up to fifth grade.

Participating in the training program in the project "Independent Living for Persons with Disabilities," Nho was visited and guided by consultants who are also persons with disabilities and medical staff from the YHCT-PHCN Hospital in Quang Tri province, teaching her how to use a wheelchair instead of a chair, and instructing exercises suitable for her health. Thanks to getting to know many people, Nho had more opportunities.

"Being shared and encouraged by other persons with disabilities, I understand more about independent living and career direction in the future. Ms. Kieu (Le Thi Thuy Kieu, a member of the ToT group) shared and connected me to another group of friends who are also persons with disabilities. I was given free yarn. From there, I learned to knit. I found this work suitable for my health, and it provides extra income, so I learned many different styles. Luckily, people loved and supported my products. Gradually, more people got to know me, and I received many orders from all over not only Quang Tri province. Selling the products not only helped me earn income but also created connections with many people. That motivated me to strive harder."

Huong was very happy to have completed her creative products.

Now, she has a suitable profession and can create income for herself. "Thank you for the project's support, assistance, and creating conditions for me to change myself to be like today. I feel that I am living a more meaningful, happy, optimistic and loving life. I really hope there will be more projects like this to help and support other persons with disabilities live independently and include into society."

The "Independent Living for Persons with disabilities" project was implemented by ACDC from March 2020 to December 2022 in 5 districts/cities: Vinh Linh, Cam Lo, Trieu Phong, Hai Lang and Dong Ha, Quang Tri province.
