Hai Phong: Learning about the Rights of Children for Parents of Disabled Children

On June 25th 2023,  ACDC collaborated with  Vietnamese Association for Parents and Hearing loss people Community organized a sharing session on children’s rights in Hai Phong city. The event is part of a series of activities to raise awareness among parents of children with disabilities and caregivers about the right of their children.

More than 40 parents, caregivers, and teachers from specialized centers attended the sharing session. The highlight of the event is that parents of children with disabilitiesare the one who shares and lead the class. These are all core students who received training from previous training courses on enhancing knowledge and skills of the project.

A game activity to connect parents of children with disabilities with each other

Many sharing contents were focused on the rights of children with disabilities, especially the form of handicapped child abuse were of great interest to the participants and were passionately discussed. Under the conduction of Mrs.Chu Thi Thanh Huong and Mrs.Hoang Thu Thuy who also are parents with hearing loss children, many parents were comfortably sharing their struggles, unanswered questions as well as sharing new information for other parents whose have children with disabilities.

Mrs Bui Thi Nhuong, parent of a child with disability, shared her thoughts: “I am very appreciated, grateful to the program for having sharing sessions like these nowadays about reasons, skills to protect children – which many parents are lacking. Particularly the lessons, pictures, simulations were enabled us parents to grasp knowledge to assist in growing, walking the same beat with our son.”

Mrs Bui Thi Thuy, teachers of the specialized school spoke:”I am thankful of the Organizing committee for having this sharing session today, so we can inform about some actions that are thought to be simple but in fact can leave a significant consequences to children of disabilities.

At the end of the sharing session, all joined attendants expressed their desire to have more events like these, so parents will have opportunity to share, support in answering about the rights to protection of children in general and children with disabilities in particular.

The communication event is within the project: Increased accountability to eliminate violence and discrimination against children with disabilities" (AVAC) implemented by ACDC, under the sponsorship of Save the Children in Hongkong and coordinated by Save the Children in Vietnam.
