Rehabilitation and homebase care for people with disabilities - Experience and solutions

Within the framework of the Inclusion 1 project - Component implemented by the Institute for Community Development Research (ACDC), on April 24 - 25, 2024, ACDC coordinated with the Department of Health of Quang Nam province to organize a workshop. "Special topic on rehabilitation for people with disabilities - Experience and solutions" in Hoi An city, Quang Nam province.

The workshop had the participation of Ms. Nguyen Thi Lan Anh - Vice President of the Vietnam Federation of Persons with Disabilities (VFD), Member of the Executive Committee of the Vietnam Women's Union, Director of ACDC; Ms. Dam Viet Ha, Deputy Director of ACDC; Mr. Tran Van Dan - Chairman of Vietnam Physical Therapy Association; Ms. Nguyen Thanh Tam - Director of Basic Need Vietnam organization; Dr. Tran Quang Huy - Dean of  Nursing Faculty, Dai Nam University; Dr. Ha Lam Chi, Deputy Director of the Department of Health in Quang Tri province; Mr. Truong Quang Binh - Head of Medical Operations Department in Quang Nam province; Mr. Hua Quoc Dung - Chairman of the Quang Nam’s Oraganization of Persons with disability (OPD); Mr. Thai Vinh Lieu - Chairman of the Quang Tri OPD - VAVA; Representatives of the DOH, DOLISA; OPDs; P.VAVA of Thua Thien Hue, Quang Tri and Quang Nam provinces; Experts from Da Nang University of Medical Technology and Pharmacy, Hai Duong University of Medical Technology; and more than 70 delegates comprising experts, technicians, and Health and Social Labor officials. They participated in delivering services across the 03 project provinces.

The purpose of the program is to sharing the results archieved by implemented activities of providing rehabilitation services, home care, and providing tools to support PwDs in the 3 Project’s province in 2023. Providing participants with complete and accurate information to improve understanding of the substance, objects, scope, role in implementation activities of multi - disciplineary rehabilitation in health care and improve the quality of life for PwDs. The workshop had presented the results of providing rehabilitation services, providing support tools and caring for PwDs at home was implemented by local MDT team; Topics with content on definition, role play, value and intervention techniques of physical therapy, occupational therapy, provision of support tools, psychology, language intervention, nursing in multidisciplinary rehabilitation.

In addition, workshop have the sharing from experts in the field of rehabilitation and nursing have contributed to helping participants better understand the combination of theoretical framework and practical situation; especially in the provinces/cities of Inclusion I Project including Quang Nam, Quang Tri and Thua Thien Hue. The workshop is also an opportunity for rehabilitation doctors, technicians and nurses from provinces and cities to share advantages, disadvantages and lessons learned during project implementation.

Discussing at the conference, Dr. Le Thi Trinh - Representative of the MDT team in Quang Nam province said: "Today's workshop is really meaningful and high quality for local medical staff as us. We have strengthened our knowledge and better understood rehabilitation in general and specialized subjects such as physical therapy, occupational therapy, providing assisitive devices, and better understood local service beneficeries, also solves questions and helps us better understand service benefitcaries and PwDs to contribute to improving the quality of service providing. I was very impressed by the presentation on Occupational Therapy by MSc. Nguyen Khac Tuan. Occupational therapy plays an extremely important role in solving the problems of many PwDs that we have intervened in our area. The issue of improving the participation abilities in daily activities for PwDs so that they have more confident and independent in life is the goal I always aim for."

This activity belongs to the project "Supporting to improve the quality of life of persons with disabilities in provinces heavily sprayed with Agent Orange" (short name is Inclusion Project 1); in Thua Thien Hue, Quang Tri and Quang Nam provinces in the period of 2023 - 2026. The project is funded by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), National Action Center for Toxic Chemicals and Environmental Treatment (NACCET) under the Ministry of Defense is the Project owner. ACDC is one of the implementing partners operating under the Center for Initiatives in Health and Population (CCIHP).
