On June 28 and 30, 2022, ACDC cooperated with Quang Tri Organization of Persons with Disabilities, Agent Orange Victims, Protection of persons with disabilities and Children's Rights (OPD) to organize 02 training classes on Independent Living and Disability Equity. The event’s purpose was to build awareness around independent living and disability equity for persons with disabilities and their caregivers. This is an activity within the framework of the project "Raising voices, creating opportunities for persons with disabilities – II" sponsored by USAID.

A participant shared her opinions related to independent living and disability inclusion

The training had 77 participants, including 67 persons with disabilities from Gio Linh district and Quang Tri town and 10 caregivers for persons with disabilities. Facilitators of the classes were officials from relevant departments/sectors/OPDs with full knowledge and skills. They were selected from those who attended previous training courses on improving Independent Living, Disability Equity and Physical Access. In addition, they had the active support from TOT members who are also persons with disabilities.

Participants were happy and excited to participate in the games of the training course

Different methods were used such as presentations, games, color cards, exercises for small groups, etc. The variety of methods helped participants understand the basic contents and knowledge of disability inclusion and independent living better. Furthermore, they also visited and practiced the accessible house model at ACDC office in Quang Tri province to understand more clearly the conditions to live independently. Here they were introduced, guided and experienced designs which are simple but useful, safe, and convenient for persons with disabilities in daily life.

A participant presented the content and gave measures to handle situations related to Independent Living

Mr. N.Q.S – An official of the Red Cross, Persons with Disabilities and Social Protection Association in Gio Son commune, Gio Linh district confided: “Participating in this training as a facilitator means a lot to me. I feel very fortunate to work with ACDC project team and facilitators who are persons with disabilities. Thanks to that, I have learned the carefulness from the preparation to the organization of the training course. This is also an opportunity for me to practice my skills, how to handle situations and how to present in front of the class.”

“Although I only instruct/exchange a few contents with everyone, it has helped me improve my communication/teaching skills and gain useful knowledge to apply to my job. I will continue to guide local persons with disabilities to improve the living environment so that they can become more independent and reduce the burden on their families and society.” – Sharing of Ms. T.T.S – A policy official of the People’s Committee in Gio Chau commune, Gio Linh district.

The training course left both facilitators and participants with many joys and meaningful lessons.
