Within the framework of the project "Strengthening integration and independent living for persons with disabilities", from July 8, 2022 to July 16, 2022, in Quang Tri province, 5 training courses on "Skills in caring for persons with disabilities” were organized for 125 health officers. They are the team taking care of persons with disabilities in the community and at home of 3 districts: Trieu Phong, Vinh Linh and Cam Lo. The activity was carried out by ACDC and Quang Tri Provincial Department of Health.

The training course aimed to improve knowledge and skills to care for persons with disabilities and some basic rehabilitation skills for health officers. Taking advantage of what was learned, trainees can continue to guide and support the care of persons with disabilities at medical facilities or at home.

At the opening of the training course, Dr. Vo Thanh Tam - Director of Trieu Phong District Medical Center shared: "Recently, rehabilitation has played an extremely important role in promoting the integration of persons with disabilities in society, so persons with disabilities can contribute their values to the development of society. Through this training, on behalf of the center's leadership, I hope that the health officers will apply the knowledge they have learned in the training course to guide their family members/persons with disabilities and give them more confidence to integrate into the community.”

The main trainers of the training courses were health officers from 03 district health centers, and members of source trainers (ToT) on skills in caring for persons with disabilities, trained by the Da Nang University of Medical Technology and Pharmacy in May. Along with practical knowledge and experience, the trainers conveyed the lectures through the methods of theory interwoven with practice, group work, solving situations and games. They improved the active participation of trainees throughout the course.

At the end of the training course, Dr. Le Duc Khien, an officer of the clinic of Hien Thanh commune, Vinh Linh district shared: "Participating in this training course, I was equipped with more skills in performing daily activities of persons with disabilities such as: learning to walk with crutches, canes, using a wheelchair... The training course gave me the opportunity to practice more professionally, understand more about persons with disabilities and skills in caring for them when they come for medical examination and treatment at the clinic. At the clinic, I will share these contents with my colleagues, so they can do it together.”

After this training, 125 health officers from 30 communes will participate in the community care team as well as case management – guiding and supporting the care of persons with disabilities at home and the clinic.
