On February 23rd -24th, 2023, within the framework of the USAID – funded project "Raising voices, creating opportunities for persons with disabilities in the 2021-2024 period", ACDC in collaboration with the Project Management Unit organized a training course on “Improved capacity on IL and DET for persons with disabilities and personal caregivers” in Hue city and Nam Dong district, Thua Thien Hue province.

The representative of Labour, War Invalids, and Social Affairs officials highly appreciated the training course on Independent Living and Disability Equality

Two days of training attracted the participation of more than 60 trainees who are persons with disabilities and their caregivers from Nam Dong, Phu Loc districts, and Huong Thuy town. In particular, apart from the participation of experienced mentors from the training of trainers (TOT group), the training course also had the presence of facilitators who are social and cultural officers, members of the OPDs, and medical staff in the locality. They are trainees of the training course on Independent Living, Disability Equality, and Physical Accessibility organized by ACDC in October 2022 and December 2022.

Participants actively answer some questions about independent living, and policies on persons with disabilities

During the training, the facilitators actively shared the contents of independent living, barriers for persons with disabilities, policies related to persons with disabilities, and financial management, renovation of accessible houses, etc. Furthermore, the use of diverse teaching methods such as group exercises, group discussions, answering through color cards, watching the introductory video about the transition house, and practicing with videos of case studies have attracted the participation of trainees, thereby helping them to grasp useful and necessary knowledge of the entire course. In order to encourage individuals and groups to contribute their ideas, the organizers prepared meaningful gifts to stimulate morale as well as contribute to creating a joyful and vibrant atmosphere in the training hall.

Some positive feedback has been recorded:

Mr. N.V.L – a person with disabilities in Phu Loc district shared: “Participating in the training session helped me understand more about independent living for persons with disabilities. Usually, after work, I stay at home and rarely participate in outside activities, because I’m unconfident about myself. Now, I can participate in the training course, and meet many people. This makes me feel happier and more confident. I hope the project will grow more and more, support and help many persons with disabilities like me.”

Trainees practice how to properly wear their own clothes

Mr. N.H - a family member of a person with a disability in Nam Dong district shared: “This is really a useful class for not only persons with disabilities but also their family members like me. Previously, I was quite vague with the issues related to persons with disabilities, but now I have received clear and specific answers. Via this, I could understand and grasp persons with disabilities and their ability to live independently better. According to the motto, "disabled but not useless", persons with disabilities can take care of themselves and do what they can to reduce the burden on their families and society. This is a really great thing. Family members like me should understand and create conditions for them to rise up in their life.”

This training course has created an opportunity for persons with disabilities to share their problems, think positively, change themselves and acquire useful knowledge to improve a safer and more convenient living environment. In the coming time, the project will coordinate with local departments and agencies to organize activities to enhance the ability to live independently as well as improve the quality of life of persons with disabilities in the area.
