Vietnam has given the priority to protect and enhance the rights for the people with disabilities (PWDs)

On June 14th, the ninth session of the Conference of States parties to the Convention on the Rights of People with Disabilities (CRPD) took place at UN Headquarter in New York (U.S.). The overarching theme of this year's session is "Implementing the 2030 development agenda for all persons with disabilities: Leaving no one behind". 

This year's session is extremely special because of the occasion of 10-year anniversary of the adoption of the CRPD, and the start of implementing the 2030 development agenda for all PWDs, attracted over 700 participations from all member states, representatives, and organization of PWDs. 

Giving a speech on the opening ceremony, Chairman of the UN General Assembly emphasized the international commitments for the PWDs all began from the UN Charter and has been developing for decades with many important milestones such as the adoption of the 2006 CRPD, high-level session of the UN General Assembly on PWDs and the 2013 development, and most recently, the integration of the disability issues in the 2030 development agenda.

The Chairman of UN General Assembly requested countries, organizations needing cooperate and approve partnership initiatives to promote and guarantee the rights of one billion of PWDs all over the world through implementing the CRPD and the 2030 development agenda. Up till now, he says there are totally 164 countries participating and approving CRPD.

Ambassador Nguyen Phuong Nga, Chief of the Vietnam Mission at the UN, Leader of Vietnam delegation attending the session emphasized the 2030 development agenda of the UN and some other Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) have not been successful if the challenges, the difficulties that PWDs facing with remained, especially poverty and equality.

 To implement the 2030 development agenda and complete the SDGs, need to build up the index and statistical data of the disability to support for creating relative developing policies as well as implementing, monitoring and evaluating the participations, contributions of PWDs.

Besides, Ambassador Nguyen Phuong Nga also featured out the importance of strengthening international cooperation, the implementation of developing commitments and friendly technological knowledge sharing session for PWDs.

Ambassador Nguyen Phuong Nga said that Vietnam has 7.2 million PWDs. Protect and promote for the rights of PWDs are priorities and it is obviously reflected in the laws and policies of Vietnamese government, including the disability issue is integrated in the SDGs. Vietnam has been putting much effort to support for PWDs in every field: health care, inclusive education, job opportunities, public services accessibility, legal consultant, sports, cultures, etc.

Mrs. Ambassador stressed that Vietnamese government always encourage and promote for the supportive participations of many stakeholders for PWDs; PWDs associations, PWDs organizations actively participate in constructing and implementing the disability policies.

The same day, the 9th COSP was elected 9 new members of the Commission of UN CRPD in term 2017-2020 including:  Kenya, Hungary, New Zealand, Russia, Japan, Saudi Arabia, Thailand, Tunisia and Uganda.

The conference was continued from June 15-16 with the roundtable discussions on eliminating poverty and inequality for PWDs, promoting the rights of persons with mental and intellectual disabilities, enhancing accessibility to information and technology and inclusive development and celebrating the 10th anniversary of the adoption of the CRPD./.
