Dong Thap Provincial Library is one of the first places opening Reading room for the people with disabilities (PWDs). This is creating the conditions for the unlucky people approaching to knowledge.

More importantly, this would be “the home of knowledge”, to improve the spirits for the PWDs as well as helping the blinds to access to education, doing the meaningful things for society.

Library for the PWDs, the blind

Reading room for the PWDs under the Dong Thap Provincial Library (Pham Huu Lau Street, Ward 5, Cao Lanh City, Dong Thap) has been officially launched at the end of June. This is an inspired and accessible knowledgeable place for the PWDS, the blinds, children selling lottery tickets, homeless people, et cetera who are very studious in this area. To make the Reading room more fruitful, the authority members of Dong Thap Provincial Library have invested three computers with specialized software for the PWDs, the blinds; braille books and 200 CDs with talking format.

Talking to the Reporter of Life and Laws Newspaper, Mrs. Nguyen Thi Hoa (Director of Dong Thap Provincial Library” shared: “The elderly, the blind children, the PWDs living in difficulties without education are priority. Currently, our library has already issued more than 20 membership cards for the PWDs. In tentative, on September 29, our library will organize a typing competition for the PWDs and the blinds. According to the statistic, there are 10 people who registered for the contest and this number is expected to increase.”

According to Mrs. Hoa, besides the inherent readers, Dong Thap Provincial Library continues persuading the PWDs, the blinds in province coming to the library. Even though this advocacy is not easy to operate, but with determination and working thoroughness, the group of library leaders and staffs will patiently persuade as many readers as possible. In the other hand, “library staffs from the bottom of their hearts, will try to understand the emotions of the PWDs and the blinds in order to open the door for them to integrate in society, express and confess their real feelings".

Mrs. Dang Thi Be Tam – Vice Director of Dong Thap Provincial Library also cheerfully shared: “There are 5 children with disabilities and visual impairments who are close friends of our library. They often go to the library for reading books, playing chess, learning to type, listening to online music, et cetera. Among these ones, Nguyen Minh Thien (born in 1998, lives in Hoa Tan Commune, Chau Thanh District, Dong Thap Province) often goes to the library to learn how to type and actively participate in social activities here. Despite the far distance from home to library, he always tries to make it happens once a week”.

Thien is picked up to the bus stop by his relatives and then catches the bus to Cao Lanh Ferry Terminal (Lap Vo District, Dong Thap Province). When he arrives at the Ferry Terminal, there will be a library staff in charge of him. At the end of the day, Thien is picked up back to the Ferry Terminal, and catches a bus coming home. Mrs. Be Tam expressed that if we are not able to fully-served him, he might not be allowed to come to our library. After such a long time in library, he is more optimistic and cheerful. Moreover, he also knows how to use his spare time for useful things to help his family.

A home for everyone

Coming to Dong Thap Provincial Library, we had chance to meet Mr. Tran Thai Hoa - Librarian (27-year-old, lives in Tan Binh Commune, Chau Thanh District, Dong Thap Province). Hoa is a blind. He is a part-time staff of this library, graduated from the Faculty of Psychological Education, University of Pedagogical, Ho Chi Minh City, in 2014. After graduation, in 2015, he was received to work at a center for the PWDs in Binh Phuoc Province, afterward coming back to serve for his motherland.

“I am a blind so I can understand how the other blinds feel. This work requires time. When I communicate with the blinds, I always try to avoid letting them in feeling of loneliness. Most importantly, when instructing the blinds to use computer, we need to be patient. For that, in a very short time, a blind who does not know computer is also know how to type, read news, listen to music, et cetera", Hoa shared his experiences.

Hoa quickly showed off his agile fingers in typing. And on his touching phone, he confidently found contacts, messaged to friends, or saved a new mobile contact. When he was asked about his future plan, Hoa gently answered: "Now, I wholeheartedly want to provide basic information for the blinds, the PWDs to reintegrate into society as well as responding for the loveable feelings from library staffs. In the up coming years, I will try to build my own happiness, but I will keep my beloved secretly, because of many economic problems, we are still not able to come further."

With mentioned positive contributions, Dong Thap Provincial Library is honored to receive The Third Labor Medal by Prime Minister. Especially, in 2016, this library will be in one of the top 10 Outstanding Provincial Libraries awarded by Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism.

From the early age, there is a person who addicted to the library.

Shared with Reporter, Mrs. Nguyen Thi Hoa (Director of Dong Thap Provincial Library) told: “Here, I am impressed by Le Thang Sang (18-year-old, lives in Cao Lanh City, Dong Thap Province). He is the closet friend of our library. From primary school, he always took their time to the library for reading. Now, he is in grade 12, but he always tries to persuade others people with the same situations coming to the library to obtain more knowledge. We appreciate his efforts and those people who are eager to learn even though their life situations are not easy because of disabilities, some of them might stop schooling”.
