From 14 - 15/07/2022, in Que Son district and Phu Ninh district, Quang Nam province, 2 training courses on independent living for persons with disabilities and their family members took place. The training attracted the participation of more than 60 practitioners who are persons with disabilities and family members of persons with disabilities. The training course trainers are officials of the Provincial Organization of Persons with Disabilities, commune-level socio-cultural civil servants and officials at health stations of 2 localities. The activity is within the project "Enhancing opportunities, empowering persons with disabilities - Phase II".

Speaking at the opening ceremony, representatives of the Labor, Invalids and Social Affairs Departments of Que Son and Phu Ninh districts were happy. They highly appreciated the attention of the project to persons with disabilities in both districts, creating opportunities for persons with disabilities to improve their knowledge of independent living. These activities will assist persons with disabilities in living confidently and developing their inherent abilities in daily activities and social activities, while also reducing their reliance on family and relatives.

Also during the training, Ms Le Thuy Huong, Program Manager for the Central Region, Department of Healing and Development, USAID Vietnam shared the meaning of the training and the overall meaning of activities to support persons with disabilities in the project through back-and-forth with participants. Thereby, she also appreciated the scale and preparation before and during these training courses.

With a student-centered approach of imparting knowledge through interaction and games, the training helped students participate actively, creating a lively atmosphere in the courses.

"I was very impressed with the training this time. After one day of participation, I have already identified barriers to persons with disabilities, and understand what independent living is like. In the past, I thought living independently was living alone, but now I understand. To live independently is to be independent in thought, independent when making decisions with the help of relatives to be included in the community."  - Mr T.V.L, a practitioner from Que Son shared.

"I'm excited to be in this class. Thanks to schooling, I have understood how to arrange furniture in the house to reduce barriers for me. I didn't know before, now that I've studied, I'll definitely rearrange the furniture in the house to make it more convenient for me to move and live."  - Mr N.V.D, a student from Phu Ninh.

Furthermore, after completing the training, the trainees provided a lot of positive and meaningful feedback. This is one of many activities carried out by the project to promote better of people with disabilities in the community.
