This project was implemented over a four-month period, from November 2017 to February 2018, with two key objectives successfully achieved: (1) To raise awareness among women and girls with disabilities (WGWDs) in order to strengthen their voice in advocating for their rights; and (2) To improve local infrastructure to better protect girls with disabilities (GWDs) in public spaces from potential acts of violence. In this context, the public lighting system was selected for enhancement.

Key Results:

  • 300 books on violence prevention for women with disabilities (WWDs) were designed, printed, and distributed to WWDs in two districts through training sessions and club meetings. These books provide essential knowledge and skills that help WWDs prevent violence and gain greater confidence in their daily lives.

  • Two training courses on violence prevention and life skills were conducted for 60 women and girls with disabilities (WGWDs) in Dong Hung and Tien Hai districts. These trainings improved participants’ awareness of violence prevention and strengthened their self-protection skills.

  • Eight WWD club meetings were held in Dong Hung and Tien Hai districts, addressing diverse topics such as daily challenges of persons with disabilities, positive thinking, health care, employment, and disability-related policies. Each meeting engaged 20–25 WWDs. These sessions created a safe and empowering space for WWDs to share experiences, develop a positive mindset, and boost their self-confidence. According to Ms. Lan Phuong, Vice Chair of the Thai Binh DPO, all participants expressed a desire for more opportunities to join similar activities in the near future.

  • Fourteen in-person consultations for WWDs were conducted in Dong Hung and Tien Hai districts. These included 3 expert-led consultations on reproductive health, nutrition, and legal advice, and 12 sessions conducted by local professionals and DPO staff. In addition, 20 WWDs received online consultations provided by ACDC experts.

  • Public lighting systems were installed and maintained in six villages in Dong Hung and Tien Hai districts. This initiative enhanced the safety and confidence of persons with disabilities in general, and WGWDs in particular, when navigating public spaces. Moreover, it helped raise community awareness about disability issues and fostered dialogue on the inclusion of persons with disabilities.
