Observed annually on 13 June, International Albinism Awareness Day aims to raise public awareness, promote human rights, and advance the equal participation of persons with albinism in all aspects of society. In 2026, the United Nations marks the Day under the theme “Proudly in My Skin – Celebrating All Skin Tones” highlighting the dignity, value, and rights of persons with albinism worldwide.

International Albinism Awareness Day was officially proclaimed by the United Nations General Assembly in 2014 and has been observed globally since 2015. The Day serves as an opportunity to increase public understanding of albinism and to call for an end to discrimination, stigma, and violence faced by persons with albinism.
Albinism is a rare, non-contagious, genetically inherited condition characterized by reduced or absent melanin pigmentation in the skin, hair, and eyes. Many persons with albinism experience visual impairments and are at increased risk of skin damage caused by ultraviolet radiation. In addition to health-related challenges, they often encounter social barriers resulting from misconceptions, prejudice, and discrimination.
The 2026 theme, “Proudly in My Skin – Celebrating All Skin Tones” emphasizes the right of persons with albinism to live safely, with dignity, respect, and equal opportunities, regardless of their skin colour or physical appearance. It also calls on governments, organizations, and communities to recognize human diversity and strengthen efforts to ensure equal access to education, healthcare, employment, and social participation.
The United Nations stresses that raising awareness, challenging harmful stereotypes, and promoting the inclusion of persons with albinism are essential steps toward building a more just, equitable, and inclusive world for all.
