Time: 2015 - 2018
The project focuses on the following areas:
INCREASED LOCAL ADVOCACY FOR DISABILITY RIGHTS IN TWO PROVINCES
ACDC conducts trainings on leadership, life skills, monitoring and evaluation, and advocacy skills. In addition, the project participates in developing provincial disabilities action plans, advocacy conference dialogue with policy makers at both provincial and national levels, and improves disabled persons organizations (DPO) and parent associations with advocacy for disability rights.
INCREASED LOCAL CAPACITY TO PROTECT THE RIGHTS OF PERSONS WITH DISABILITIES
The project improves the local capacity to protect the rights of persons with disabilities through communication and consultation skills of local legal aid centers; providing hands-on training for Ministry of Justice staff; organizing annual field trips on legal clinics using an outreach model whereby attorneys with legal aid services spend several days visiting rural areas and clients are able to travel to the clinic to meet lawyers face-to-face.
IMPROVED PROVINCIAL DISABILITY ACCESSIBLIITY PLANS
The project focuses on improving access to key buildings that provide essential services for persons with disabilities. Trainings with local officials as well as DPO members in the Code and Standards for Accessible Construction are provided to support each province to develop a Disability Accessibility Plan.
RESULTS
The expected results are a sustainable network of DPOs, as well as groups of women with disabilities and parents’ associations with better relationships with their local authorities who can advocate for adherence to disability laws and plans. Over 1540 persons with disabilities directly benefit in the form of improved skills and knowledge about their rights and services available to them. In addition, over 7,800 persons with disabilities and family members will directly benefit from access to legal advice that can help them resolve legal issues and exercise their legal rights, such as social protection and free vocational training.
