The theme of International Women’s Day 2022 has been announced by the United Nations (UN) as “Gender equality today for a sustainable tomorrow” with the aim of recognizing the contributions made by women and girls around the world, those who are working at the forefront of adapting, reducing and responding to climate change, in order to build a more stable future for everyone.
In the context of climate change and the spreading pandemic, more than anyone else, women and girls with disabilities (W&GWD) are vulnerable and often get left behind. Climate change, diseases and other crises have limited the possibility for continuous and long-term access to healthcare services while increasing gender-based violence as well as the barriers to access to information, education, employment, and other services. In developing countries, where resources for crisis response are limited, W&GWD are affected even more heavily.
International Women's Day is an opportunity for us to once again see clearly the challenges that women with disabilities face and to speak up to find solutions.
On International Women's Day, let us remind ourselves that as long as a women still faces discrimination, harassment, inequality or oppression, we are all affected. Therefore, we are not alone, there are millions of women out there who are in this with us.
Adapt – Unite – Cooperate are the primary actions of women with disabilities to create an Equal - Inclusive - Stable world for women with disabilities in particular and women around the world in general.
