Quang Nam: Communication for Prevention of gender-based violence in family

Attending the event were Ms. Doan Thi Hoai Nhi - Deputy Director of the Department of Labour, Invalids and Social Affairs of Quang Nam province, Head of the Project Management Board, representatives of authorities and departments, and reporters of Radio and Television Station of Dien Ban commune. The program was organized on a very large scale with the participation of 20 Red Cross Associations at commune level. The message of protection and care for persons with disabilities was also conveyed emotionally and meaningfully to nearly 200 spectators who came to watch and cheer.

Ms. Doan Thi Hoai Nhi - Deputy Director of the provincial Department of Labour, Invalids and Social Affairs said: “In a short time, the event was a great success. This came from the support of USAID, through ACDC, and especially with the enthusiastic spirit and best efforts of the young generation with the spirit of "you don't need young people, it's hard to have young people" from The Red Cross and Youth Unions of 20 communes were the key factors in making the event a great success.”

The event became more attractive with the competition from 4 teams, including members who are persons with disabilities. The content of the competitions included: greetings, art, knowledge test on gender-based violence in the family, skits, video clips and interaction with the audience. Most of the participating teams had creative and unique performances in the competitions. Outstanding in the knowledge contest, the teams all won absolute points and especially the skit competition left many impressions and emotions. The skits were mainly performed through folk songs and plays carrying messages about prevention of gender-based violence in the family, and concern for the protection of persons with disabilities in the family and community. As a result, the Organizing Committee awarded the First Prize to Cluster 1 (Dien Quang, Dien Phong, Dien Trung, Dien Phuong, Dien Minh); Second Prize for Cluster 2 (Vinh Dien, Dien An, Dien Thang Nam/Central/North); Third Prize for Cluster 3 (Dien Hoa, Dien Tien, Dien Hong, Dien Tho, Dien Phuoc) and Consolation Prize for Cluster 4 (Dien Duong, Dien Ngoc, Dien Nam Dong/Trung/Bac).

Mr. Doan Ngoc Hung, Deputy Head of Department of Labour, Invalids and Social Affairs of Dien Ban commune shared: “I had tears in my eyes when I watched real-life situations presented in the play "Blind Mother". This event was really large and impressive and brought a lot of emotions in the hearts of the attendees. On this occasion, authorities at all levels also reviewed, acknowledged and promoted the care and prevention of gender-based violence in the family as well as in society, especially gender-based violence against persons with disabilities.”

Ms. N.T.H, an audience member in Dien Ban commune praised: “The content of the event is very attractive and diverse. For the first time, I watched a big event about persons with disabilities in the commune. The event brought interesting and touching performances with real daily situations in the family and society. Each performance expressed the hearts of persons with disabilities through the traditional beauty of folk songs and “bai choi”. I will never forget this event."

The event closed with great success. Under the cooperation of ACDC and the Project Management Board of the project "Strengthening opportunities and enhancing the status of persons with disabilities – phase 2" funded by the United States Agency for International Development in Vietnam (USAID), in recent years, many activities have been implemented to raise awareness of prevention of gender-based violence for persons with disabilities in the locality.
