In late October and early November 2022, more than 100 women with disabilities in Bac Tra My and Nam Tra My districts, Quang Nam province, received free fertility checkups. Implementation activities under the coordination of the Action to the Community Development Institute (ACDC) and the Project Management Board "Raising Voices, Creating Opportunities, Phase II".

Doctors on paperwork guide beneficiaries of the project

Participating in the activity, women with disabilities were examined by doctors with a variety of categories such as general examination, endoscopy, ultrasound, testing, gynaecology, etc. During the visit, doctors consulted on health issues as well as health care skills in general and reproductive health in particular for each woman. In particular, two cases of women with disabilities being sexually abused leading to unintended pregnancy ((while the family was unaware) in Nam Tra My district were also discovered. Shortly, the project will work with local governments and families to support these cases.

Beneficiaries with the assistance of their relatives actively cooperate with medical staff to conduct blood collection

Dr Dang Duy Nhan - Deputy Director of Bac Tra My District Medical Center said: “We thank the US Agency for International Development (USAID). Through this research, disabled women now have more access to healthcare and a better chance of early illness detection. Thanks to this visit, the medical team of the district health centre and the commune health station examined and detected reproductive, cardiovascular, eye, and other diseases. Through preliminary comprehensive records, we also examined and understood the conditions of women with disabilities in the region to monitor their health periodically, manage and have timely interventions."

Beneficiaries register for medical examination and treatment under the support of project staff

Ms T.T.L.T, Duong Lam village, Tra Duong commune, Bac Tra My district, a woman with movement disabilities, said: “We are in such a remote area with lots of difficulties, do not have conditions, lack of money for the health check. Today, it is very precious to have a group of doctors arrive with the equipment for the examination. I, along with the women with disabilities here may now seek treatment since this medical assessment, which has helped us identify the disease we have. The doctors and nurses were enthusiastic throughout the examination and consultation process, describing my health and the ailments of my sisters and guiding me as to where to go for treatment and illnesses for which the medical insurance could be used.

The delegation of doctors at the North and Nam Tra My district health centres took a souvenir photo with ACDC staff

Ms H.T.N from Tra Van commune, Nam Tra My district shared: “My house is far away, in the inner roof. When I got the invitation to visit the doctor, I was overjoyed and could not wait until the morning. I have never had as thorough of an examination as I received today; typically, I just walk to the clinics to ask the nurse for pills to take home and drink. Thank you to the organiser and doctor for checking me out and pointing up several things I should pay attention to at home. I will pay attention and follow.

The activity is within the project "Raising voices, creating opportunities for persons with disabilities - phase II" funded by USAID through ACDC.
