“Even though I'm 29 years old this year, this is the first time I've had a medical examination. I was very excited when I received the invitation, so I came here early today for a checkup. I'm glad to hear from the doctors that I don't have any major health issues. Thank you to the doctors and the project for organising the health checkup today.” – That is shared by Ms T.T.L, a woman with disabilities in Hai Phong commune, Hai Lang district, Quang Tri province during the last reproductive health checkup. The activity was organised by the IAction to the Community Development Institute (ACDC) in collaboration with the Quang Tri Provincial Project Management Board in Hai Lang district on December 15-16, 2022. The purpose of the free reproductive health check-up is to improve access to health care services in general and sexual-reproductive health in particular for women with disabilities while raising awareness and self-protection and health care for women with disabilities in the province.

Beneficiaries are examined in the Hai Lang district

Nearly 110 disabled women between the ages of 15 and 60 have been fully examined for services such as total peripheral blood cell analysis, fresh sclerotia, cervical examination (by machine), general ultrasound, mammography and thyroid ultrasound, electrocardiogram, etc. Thus, multiple cases of fungal infections, vaginal infections, high liver enzymes, cataracts, high blood pressure, etc. have been discovered and consulted.

Nurses conduct blood collection tests for the beneficiary's blood synthesis

Other shares of women who attended the medical check:

Ms N.T.N - a woman with disabilities in Hai Hung commune said, "Every time I visit the hospital, I just have a heart checkup since I have a heart issue. I'm so delighted today that even if I would like to, I don't have the proper conditions."

Beneficiaries with the support of family members can receive a direct ear, nose, and throat examination here

Ms L.T.K.O – a disabled woman in Hai Phong commune: “It's been a long time since I had a general health check. This morning I had to fast for an accurate blood test, so I was a bit hungry after the examination. Fortunately, there were people in the project who prepared cakes and milk very carefully for us. Hopefully, there will be regular check-ups like this so that persons with disabilities have the opportunity to have their health checked more often.”

Relatives assist beneficiaries in getting a medical examination

A specialist doctor of Hai Lang District Health Center L.T.N.N shared: “Persons with disabilities have difficulty walking, so they only checked out when they have illness/pain or weakness. Through this examination, we detected a number of cases of bladder tumours, thyroid nodules, myocardial ischemia, etc. and advised them to the Medical Center for definitive diagnosis and treatment. I hope that the project will support us to have visits like this so that women with disabilities can be detected, treated and consulted in time when they have an illness.”

Beneficiaries actively cooperate with doctors to treat and detect diseases early

The activity is part of the project "Raising voices, creating opportunities for persons with disabilities" phase 2, funded by USAID, and implemented by ACDC in three provinces of Quang Tri, Thua Thien Hue, and Quang Nam.
